March Break CampsMarch Break Camp is a great opportunity to sharpen soccer skills and make new friends during the school break. The camp is organized into 3 hour sessions and players may register for one or more sessions during the week. Each session focuses on specific skills and half of the session is set up as soccer games so that players can incorporate the session skill into the game. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience Power Soccer coaching in a dynamic soccer clinic format.
The United States Power Soccer Association is the governing body of the first competitive team sport designed for power wheelchair users. Since power soccer players can't use their feet to kick the ball, a footguard is attached to the front of the chair. Players then use their chairs to manipulate the ball. Powerchair Football, also known as Power Soccer, is a variant of association football for people. Two teams of four players use powerchairs equipped with footguards to attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch (330 mm) football in an attempt.
The clinics will run from March 16th-20th, 2020 inclusive at selected locations. This year we will run our March Break Camp at The Toronto City Sports Centre.
The Foot GuardToday, I am going to talk about the different kinds of foot guards that help the person kick/move the soccer ball around the court. There are plastic kinds and metal kinds. Back in 2007 when I first started playing power soccer (remember, I was an avid wheelchair basketball athlete before power soccer), I would use a plastic, blue crate for a foot guard which got bungee corded around my old red Invacare mid-wheel drive power wheelchair. But that plan didn’t last too long. Soon after that plan, my former coach of the BORP Crushers told the assistant coach and one of the father’s of my teammates that I needed a better guard to push and kick the ball around.
So, from scratch, the assistant coach made me a white, plastic foot guard that got screwed in my red Invacare mid-wheel power wheelchair. I had that foot guard on my power wheelchair for a couple years until it was time for a new one. My parents were thinking of getting rid of my red Quickie P200 power chair (the one that I still use today, but only for power soccer) because they thought I didn’t need it.
Sure enough, I did need it after all. My former coach wanted me to use in the sport and to buy a black metal guard from a website called, powersoccershop.com. The black metal guard was challenging to put on my Quickie P200 power chair, but my dad managed fine. It was hard to get used to the black metal guard and the chair as the chair was faster and the guard made stronger and faster kicks. I got used to it though and I still play with the same chair and the same guard today. For people who are brand new to the sport, coaches recommend their players that they use a plastic crate for a “foot guard” and work up to the metal kind.

The crate may or may not stay on the chair as it is with bungee cords but it is a start. As players progress in the sport, they may find themselves lost in the sport because it fun to play and it is challenging because the soccer ball can get ahead of the foot guard and so you need to get your chair in front of the soccer ball and then turn it and go the other way to score and win the game. The guards are built strong and powerful, but they can still get bent and out of shape if another power wheelchair crashes into the player. Even though power soccer is a tough sport to play, the players still have a lot of fun when they are still learning lots. Some people even hand make their own foot guards.

One of my friends who is on the upper division team of the BORP Earthquakes wanted her ex husband to make her a foot guard from scratch and metal steel bars and he still makes steel foot guards today. For people who are a little bit more advanced and more experienced in playing this sport for several years (like me), coaches recommend their players to get a metal foot guard which can be built from scratch like said above or built in a shop. Like I said above, I got my foot guard from an online store that specifically sells things for power soccer.
Power soccer is my life and I don’t know what I would do without it. The team that I am on currently, one of the players still has a plastic guard for his chair while the rest of my teammates have shiny black metal foot guards. It is pretty interesting to still see a plastic guard still out on the court. But I am amazed in the quality of the foot guards themselves and how they can help the players so much.
